El Grito Ceremony
September 16th. is the day that Mexico celebrates its National Independence Day. It is the most important civic date in the country.
The celebration begins the night of the 15th, with the ceremony of "El Grito", remembering September 15, 1810, in which the priest Miguel Hidalgo called on residents of the town of Dolores to band together and rise up against the Spaniards. The priest also called upon the inhabitants of the neighboring villages with the strong ring of a bell from his church.
This festivity takes place throughout the country and in those cities in which there is a consular or diplomatic representation and where the Mexican community is concentrated.
